7 Mindset Habits That Strengthen Your Consulting Success

Practical routines that sharpen focus, build confidence, and support consistent growth

A few years ago, I added a small practice to my day.

Each morning, I’d take a minute to visualise where I wanted to be in five years.

It didn’t feel significant at the time.

But over the months, that simple routine began to shape my decisions, actions, and direction.

It became clear that mindset—not just skillset—is what drives sustainable success.

The most effective consultants and coaches I work with understand this.

They don't leave mindset to chance.

They practise daily habits that improve their resilience, focus, and clarity.

Here are seven that have made a real difference for me—and for the clients I support.

1. Visualise your five-year goals

Take a moment—morning and evening—to picture where you want to be.

See it clearly: your work, your clients, your income, your life.

This habit helps you make better short-term decisions that serve your long-term direction.

2. Note your daily wins—and tomorrow’s priorities

At the end of each day, I write down three things I’ve achieved.

Then I note three priorities for the next day.

This keeps me focused, reduces decision fatigue, and builds a sense of momentum.

3. Reflect on how you’re feeling

I check in with my emotional state twice a day.

This helps me understand my reactions—and manage my energy.

It’s especially useful when navigating complex client dynamics or high-stakes work.

4. Practise suspending judgement

Several times a day, I remind myself to stay open.

Letting go of quick judgments allows me to hear more, learn more, and lead better conversations.

5. Challenge your assumptions

Daily, I ask myself: “What assumptions am I making?”

It’s a simple question that unlocks fresh thinking and protects against blind spots.

6. Read or listen for 45 minutes

Every day, I spend focused time reading or listening to something useful.

It keeps my thinking sharp—and my advice relevant.

7. Do something unfamiliar

New experiences shake up old patterns.

Earlier this year, I asked my teenage daughter if she wanted to go on a father–daughter trip.

I expected Barcelona or Madrid.

She chose Svalbard.

So next month we’re off to see the Northern Lights, dog sledding, and snowmobiling—at minus 20 degrees.

That trip will take both of us out of our comfort zones.

It’s a reminder that stretching yourself matters—whether in life or in consulting.

You don’t need to implement all seven habits.

But starting with just one can change how you show up each day.

And that shift compounds over time.
